Wild Dunes is an oceanfront resort on Isle of Palms, SC. Wild Dunes has two famous golf courses on it: the Wild Dunes Links Course, and the Harbor Course, both designed by Tom Fazio. Long ago, the 18th hole at the Links Golf Course was the place where  Lord Cornwallis commanded 2,000 men to head down the island, cross  Breach Inlet and attack Fort Moultrie from the rear. It was  America's first victory in the South. A century later, the  islands waterways played another historic role. It was here that the  Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley, rammed and sank the Union warship,  USS Housatonic. It was the world's first successful submarine attack in  battle. The anchor to the Housatonic sits outside the reception center. 

The Wild Dunes Resort Harbor Course is one of two layouts on the  property designed by renowned golf architect Tom Fazio. The Harbor  Course challenges a player's shotmaking and strategic thinking skills  with a layout incorporating marshes, lagoons, and a portion of the  Intracoastal Waterway. As the name indicates, water plays a big part in the make-up of  the Harbor Course layout: more than half the course is bounded by what  is conceivable the world’s longest water hazard, South Carolina’s  Intracoastal Waterway. 

One of Tom Fazio's earliest designs, the Links Course at Wild Dunes  received a great deal of attention upon opening in 1980, and deserves no less acclaim now in a discussion about the best public courses in South Carolina. The course is kept in prime condition and is truly one of Fazio's great works.Though it plays just over 6,700 yards, the Links has ample defense. The  undulating greens are roughly half the size of those on other notable  Fazio courses, making an up-and-down nearly impossible from certain  areas. Difficult rough penalizes drives that miss the fairway, and  well-placed pot bunkers swallow shots.
